Educated at the University of St. Andrews (B.Sc.) and University of Cambridge (Ph.D.). Postdoctoral research with Professor Paul de Mayo (Western Ontario) and Professor William Parker (Stirling). Appointed to the academic staff of UNSW in 1974. Visiting research positions have also been held at Ohio State and Durham Universities. Winner of the 1993 Royal Australian Chemical Institute Ollé Prize. Emeritus Professor 2010.


New organic host-guest inclusion compounds: design, synthesis, structure determination, and application.
Crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry: molecular recognition, application of intermolecular forces in synthesis.
Synthetic alicyclic and heterocyclic chemistry, Ritter-type reactions, cyclisation and rearrangement chemistry.
