Key Academic Personnel - Roles and Responsibilities

Head of School - The Head of School is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the School, managing the overall research performance, student education experiences and community engagement. The Academic Staff of the School report to the Head of School who is supported by the School Executive Committee: Deputy Head of School, Director of Research, Director of Teaching, Director of Strategic Hires, School Manager.

Deputy Head of School – Responsible for providing high level support to the Head of School in the academic leadership and management of the School and to be an executive member of the School and the identified delegate of the Head of Schoolduring their absence.

Director of Research - Responsible for leading the Research Activities within the School, and liaising with the Head of School and the Science Faculty on matters relating to research. The key priority of this position is to enhance the research performance and research profile of the School 

Director of Teaching – Responsible for the management and operation of the School by overseeing teaching functions of the School, and for providing expertise and advice on matters relating to teaching and learning.

Postgraduate Coordinator (Student Review/Completion)- Responsible for oversight of the postgraduate programs and students including organization of the postgraduate reviews leading to timely completions. On behalf of the Head of School act as a liaison between the students, supervisors and the Graduate Research School, and represent the School at the Faculty Research Training Committee meetings. 

Postgraduate Coordinator(Admissions/Scholarships) -Responsible for oversight of the admissions and scholarships for postgraduate programs and students including ensuring candidates are strongly positioned in a supportive research environment  and capable of completing their degree programs in a timely fashion. Regarding higher degree scholarships and admissions and on behalf of the Head of School, act as a liaison between the students, supervisors and the Graduate Research School, and represent the School at the Faculty Research Scholarship Ranking Committee meetings.

Honours Coordinator – Responsible for the coordination of all Chemistry Honours degrees - (i) Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry, (ii) the Bachelor of Advanced Science majoring in Chemistry, (iii) the Bachelor of Science in Medicinal Chemistry, and (iv) the Bachelor of Science in Nanoscience.

Seminar Coordinators - Responsible for coordinating invited seminar speakers, domestic and international, to present lectures at UNSW.

First Year Undergraduate Coordinator – Responsible for the overall management of First Year teaching and learning, implementing School policies and ensuring First Year lectures & tutorials run smoothly in conjunction with laboratory experiments.

Second Year Undergraduate Coordinator - Responsible for the overall management of Second Year teaching and learning, implementing School policies and ensuring Second Year lectures run smoothly in conjunction with laboratory experiments.

Third Year Undergraduate Coordinator - Responsible for the overall management of Third Year teaching and learning, implementing School policies and ensuring Third Year lectures run smoothly in conjunction with laboratory experiments.

First Year Laboratory Coordinator – Responsible for selection and training of demonstrators, monitoring enrolments and the allocation of bench spaces, production of laboratory manuals and OHS compliance in First Year laboratories.

IT Coordinator – Responsible for IT systems, help and advice.

 


 

 

School Professional Personnel - Roles and Responsibilities

School Manager – Responsible for all School administrative and operational business.  The School Manager overseas management of School research and teaching laboratories and the Chemistry Store.

Project Officer– Responsible for providing project management support and administrative and office management services to the School of Chemistry.  The Project Officer handles all matters relating to Head of School calendar appointments, building access, bookings for seminar and meeting rooms, accommodation for special guests.

Finance Officer – Management Reporting Analyst

Postgraduate Administrative Officer – Responsible for all matters relating to postgraduate enrolments, scholarships and mandatory safety courses.

Undergraduate Administrative Officer – Responsible for all matters relating to undergraduate enrolments, timetabling, room allocations, examinations, awards, and term planning.

Student Support Manager – Responsible for the provision of high quality advice and information to both students and UNSW staff. In particular the appointee will advise students regarding both the day-to-day aspects of their courses and how these fit in with their program of study. In conjunction with academic staff, the appointee will provide administrative support for running first year lecture, laboratory and tutorial classes.

Lab Manager (Research) – Responsible for the management and development of the School’s research laboratories and is responsible for all operational aspects of these laboratories, including School research instruments, access, training, safety, maintenance and procurement.

Lab Manager (Teaching) -Responsible for the management and operation of Teaching Laboratories in the School of Chemistry. Leads the technical staff team tasked with running teaching laboratories to support undergraduate teaching courses and laboratory focused outreach activities.

Store Manager – Responsible for managing the Chemistry Store, supplying chemicals, general laboratory supplies, gases, liquid nitrogen and dry ice etc.

Store Officer – Responsible for Store orders, Store Catalogue enquiries and requests

IT Officer – Responsible for IT systems help and advice.
