Drug Discovery and Development Using Synthetic Chemistry

Nature provides an array of chemicals that have profound biological properties, which can be used for the treatment of disease. These materials are not readily available from their natural source and chemists focus on discovering ways to restore access to these valuable materials. In addition to discovering new chemistry and strategies, this work provides us with the opportunity to develop molecules that are optimised for the treatment of diseases such as aged macular degeneration and cancer. I will describe my journey to achieving these goals and how synthesis of small molecules can led to the discovery of potential therapeutics.
