Abstract

This lecture will discuss the recent developments in research into the chemistry of high oxidation state alkylidene complexes, the challenges in this chemistry that remain, and how we propose to progress toward reaching those goals. Recent developments include the synthesis of oxo alkylidene complexes of molybdenum, applications in organic chemistry aimed toward the synthesis of complex molecules containing biologically stable polar functionalities, and probing the chemistry of organometallic complexes supported on silica.  Ultimately we want to understand how alkylidenes are formed and die and whether in heterogeneous catalytic systems we can reach selectivities that approach those accessible in homogeneous systems.
