In the context of institutional-driven transitions into blended learning environments, we are facing an increasing tension between how to engage students in self-regulated learning linked to delivery of rich, active learning environments on campus. The effective integration of face to face and online experiences is difficult to deliver – learners can disengage both through barriers encountered in accessing technologies and tools, or by simply opting not engage with the online activities. 

Learning chemistry requires students to develop fluency in the different representations that we adopt and we have explored the use of multimodal representations in digital learning resources.  Our research into the instructional design and scaffolding that is required to support students’ engagement online, using technology as an invisible vehicle for learning and assessment, in chemistry will be presented. In particular, we have gained insights into mechanisms to motivate students into deeper thinking about their own thinking (metacognition). Successful attempts to deliver inclusive online learning environments that support student on-campus learning will be shared along with discussion of when things go wrong!
