Seminar: Dr Hao Liu - Porous Carbon Based Composites for Rechargable Batteries

To survive from the coming energy crisis, a lot of countries are concentrating attention once again on national initiatives to re-evaluate utilization of alternative energy sources and replacement of the internal combustion engine with a wireless electric motor. Development of electric vehicles or hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) demands high power batteries which can operate under high current conditions. It is crucial, therefore, to develop new materials or technologies to improve the electrochemical performance of rechargeable batteries with higher energy density. Porous carbon based materials have been attracted great attention owing to their unique structures and electrochemical properties for energy storage and conversion systems. Herein, I summarized some relevant materials applied to a series of applications, including lithium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries and lithium oxygen batteries. The results demonstrate that these porous carbon based materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance due to their improved conductivity and reactivity. This contribution would be instructive for the enhancement of low-conductive nano-structured materials for energy storage and conversion.
